Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation is a non-invasive treatment option that involves the use of electrical current to stimulate nerves and muscles. Electrical stimulation uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. By placing electrodes on the skin in various locations the physical therapist can recruit the appropriate muscle fibers.

Contracting the muscle via electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscle. The physical therapist can change the current setting to allow for a forceful or gentle muscle contraction. Along with increasing muscle strength, the contraction of the muscle also promotes blood supply to the area which assists in healing.

There are several potential benefits of using electrical stimulation as a treatment option, including:

  1. Pain relief: Electrical stimulation can help to relieve pain by interrupting the transmission of pain signals to the brain and by stimulating the production of natural painkillers such as endorphins.

  2. Muscle strengthening: Electrical stimulation can help to strengthen muscles that have been weakened due to injury, surgery, or neurological conditions.

  3. Improved circulation: Electrical stimulation can help to improve circulation by stimulating the muscles and blood vessels, which can help to reduce swelling and promote healing.

  4. Reduced muscle spasms: Electrical stimulation can help to reduce muscle spasms by interrupting the abnormal firing of motor neurons that can cause involuntary muscle contractions.

  5. Improved range of motion: Electrical stimulation can help to improve range of motion by reducing stiffness and increasing flexibility in the affected area.

  6. Accelerated healing: Electrical stimulation can help to promote the production of growth factors, which can accelerate the healing process and improve tissue regeneration.

Overall, electrical stimulation can be a safe and effective treatment option for a variety of patients.
